Introduction to Power Tools
& Materials

A 4-Hour Professional Workshop
Cost: $250 | Location: DIY Resource Center
This class is designed to take the mystery out of home improvement. We move beyond simple "how-to" videos and dive into the professional logic of how homes are built, how materials
are sourced, and how tools are mastered safely.

Section 1: The Foundation of Knowledge
---Most Common Materials in California: We discuss the specific materials that dominate the West Coast market, such as Douglas Fir framing, OSB, stucco, and cement fiber siding. Learn why these are chosen for our climate and seismic needs.
---Building Systems Explained: An overview of how your home functions as a single unit. We explain the "skeleton" (framing), the "circulatory system" (plumbing and HVAC), and the "nervous system" (electrical).

---Demolition Explained: Professional demolition isn't just swinging a hammer. We cover how to identify what’s inside a wall before you open it and how to strip a room down to the studs without damaging the home’s integrity.

Section 2: Material Strategy & Logistics

---Comparing Materials and Pricing: Not all wood or hardware is created equal. We compare "Big Box" store quality versus professional lumber yard supplies and how to spot the difference in price and performance.

---Selecting the Right Materials: Learn how to choose the specific grade of material for your project—when to spend more on "Select" grade and when "Standard" or "Utility" will get the job job done.

---Rough-In vs. Finish Materials: We clarify the two major phases of construction.
o Rough-in: The structural and utility components that get covered up.
o Finish: The flooring, trim, and fixtures that you see and touch every day.

---Ordering and Delivery Logistics: How to speak the language of a dispatcher, how to calculate your "take-off" (material list), and how to coordinate professional deliveries to your job site.

Section 3: Safety, Security & PPE

---Small Renovation Essentials: A walkthrough of the "Top 10" most commonly used tools for kitchen, bath, and room updates.
---Handheld Power Tools: Hands-on instruction for Drills, Impact Drivers, and Oscillating Multi-tools. We focus on proper grip, trigger control, and choosing the right bits for different surfaces.
---Saws and Large Equipment: A safety-first introduction to the Circular Saw and Miter Saw. We explain how to manage "kickback" and how to set up your workspace for long, accurate cuts.
---Best Tools to Own: We provide an honest list of which tools are worth buying for your permanent collection and which ones are "one-hit wonders" that you should rent instead.

Section 4: The Tool Lab

Section 5: Scaling Your Project
---Tool Rentals & Tool Drop: Some projects require "The Big Stuff." We introduce you to Tool Drop, our complementary business. We show you how to access professional grade equipment like demo hammers or floor sanders via rental, ensuring you have the right power for the job without the high cost of ownership.
---Open Q&A: The final hour is dedicated to your specific projects. Bring your measurements, photos, and questions, and we will help you build your plan.
